What is your date of birth?
We use this to calculate how many years you have until retirement.
How your jaarruimte is calculated
The formula is set out in Dutch income tax law and works the same way every year. Only the amounts and the percentage change.
1. Contribution base
Your gross annual income minus the AOW-franchise — the slice of income already covered by the Dutch state pension, so you need not provide for it yourself. Income above the maximum contribution base does not count.
2. Provisional allowance
The contribution base times the statutory percentage. Under the new Dutch pension act that is 30%; through 2022 it was 13.3%.
3. Deductions
If you accrue pension through an employer, your factor A times the accrual factor comes off. Premiums you already paid this year come off too. What remains is your jaarruimte.
Note: the allowance you claim in your tax return for a given year is calculated from your income and factor A of the year before. For your 2026 return you use your 2025 figures.
Official parameters per tax year
These amounts are set in Dutch tax law and adjusted each year through the Bijstellingsregeling directe belastingen in the Staatscourant; the tax authority publishes them. Pensionplanner calculates with exactly these figures.
| Tax year | AOW-franchise | Percentage | Max. contribution base | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | € 19.172 | 30% | € 118.628 | 6,27 |
| 2025 | € 18.475 | 30% | € 119.325 | 6,27 |
| 2024 | € 17.545 | 30% | € 120.255 | 6,27 |
| 2023 | € 13.646 | 30% | € 115.164 | 6,27 |
| 2022 | € 12.837 | 13,3% | € 102.029 | 6,27 |
| 2021 | € 12.672 | 13,3% | € 99.517 | 6,27 |
| 2020 | € 12.472 | 13,3% | € 97.639 | 6,27 |
| 2019 | € 12.275 | 13,3% | € 95.318 | 6,27 |
| 2018 | € 12.129 | 13,3% | € 92.946 | 6,27 |
| 2017 | € 12.032 | 13,8% | € 91.285 | 6,5 |
The AOW-franchise above is the one used for annuity premium deduction (article 3.127 Wet IB 2001). Employer pension schemes use different franchise amounts. The accrual factor is the number your factor A is multiplied by before it is subtracted from your provisional allowance. Source: the Dutch tax authority's Hulpmiddel lijfrentepremie
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an account to calculate my jaarruimte?
No. This calculator is free and does not ask for an email address. Your input stays in your own browser and is never sent to a server.
Which income should I enter?
Your gross annual income from the year before the tax year you are deducting in. For your 2026 return, enter your 2025 income. You will find it on your Inkomensverklaring, your annual payslip summary or your tax return.
Where do I find my factor A?
On the Uniform Pensioenoverzicht (UPO) from your employer or pension provider, for the same year as your income. If you accrue no employer pension, enter 0. Defined-contribution schemes under the new Dutch pension act often no longer report a factor A; in that case use the premium paid.
What is reserveringsruimte and is it shown here?
Reserveringsruimte is allowance you did not use in the previous ten years and may still use, up to a statutory maximum. This calculator shows what is left for the year you entered; working out all ten years at once needs figures per year, which is what the full tool is for.
Are these amounts official?
The AOW-franchise, the percentage, the maximum contribution base and the accrual factor come from published Dutch tax-authority figures for tax years 2016 through 2026. The outcome is an indication, not advice; your tax return remains your own responsibility.
What does a contribution save me in tax?
A deductible contribution lowers your taxable box 1 income. How much you get back depends on the bracket your income falls in. The result below works that benefit out for you straight away.
Need more than one year?
The full tool reads your Dutch income, pension and tax statements automatically, calculates every year from 2016 at once, and adds up your state pension, employer pension, annuity and box 3 income into one monthly figure.
